> **Summary:** Lens solution (lens fluid) is used by contact lens wearers to clean, disinfect, store and rinse their lenses. Using the right solution correctly prevents irritation, dry eye and infection and makes lenses last longer.

## Quick Facts
- **Purpose:** Clean, disinfect, store and rinse contact lenses.
- **Disinfection time:** Generally four to six hours in solution (see the product's instructions).
- **Peroxide neutralisation:** Usually around six hours before the lens can be worn.
- **Lens case:** Replace at least every three months.

## Why Lens Solution Matters
Lenses that are not cleaned regularly are a common cause of dry eye and collect bacteria, viruses and other sources of infection. Lens solution removes these deposits so lenses do not irritate the eye and last longer. There are several types; the product must be compatible with the lens and used according to its instructions, and the fluid in the case should be changed regularly.

## How to Use Lens Solution
- Wash and disinfect hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching a lens.
- Remove the right lens first, then the left, drawing it out gently with the fingertips.
- Clean according to the solution's instructions, rubbing gently with the fingers to remove dirt, oil and protein deposits.
- Disinfect by leaving the lenses in solution, generally for four to six hours, to clear bacteria, viruses and fungi.
- Rinse with lens fluid before inserting so chemicals are removed.
- Store in a clean, dry lens case made for the purpose.

**Important warning:**
- Never rinse or store lenses or the case in tap water, bottled water or saliva: Acanthamoeba in water can cause a serious, sight-threatening corneal infection.
- Use fresh solution every time; never top up old solution.
- After each use rinse the case with fresh solution, let it air-dry open and replace it at least every three months.
- Avoid swimming or showering while wearing lenses.

## Types of Lens Solution
- **Multi-purpose solution:** The most frequently used; cleans, moistens, rinses and cares for the lens in one.
- **Peroxide solution:** Deep cleaning and disinfection. A powerful chemical: the lens must not be worn until the solution is fully neutralised, usually around six hours; wearing it earlier harms the eye.
- **Hydrogel solution:** For silicone hydrogel lenses; removes protein deposits and keeps lenses moist and smooth.
- **Lens drops:** Moisten the eye and the lens while the lens is worn; they do not clean or disinfect. Products containing oil should not be used with contact lenses, as they can damage the lens.

## How to Choose a Lens Solution
- It should suit the eye's pH and the type of lens worn.
- Use the solution your doctor recommends, as it is compatible with your lenses.
- It should feel comfortable and not irritate the eye on insertion or removal.
- Check the use-by date; avoid expired or nearly expired products.
- Choose a lens case that allows sterile storage.

## Benefits
- Disinfects lenses and lowers the risk of infection and irritation.
- Keeps lenses moist, avoiding discomfort, stinging or burning on insertion and removal.
- Regular cleaning lets lenses be worn for longer.
- Moist, smooth lenses are more comfortable to wear.
