> **Summary:** Op. Dr. Nail Sönmez, Chief Physician of Kudret Eye İstanbul, explains how multifocal intraocular lenses, including trifocal lenses, end the age-related loss of near vision (presbyopia) and the need for glasses. They are especially popular with patients over 40; most return to daily life within 3-4 days.

## Quick Facts
- **Typical candidates:** over 40, presbyopia, cataract with refractive error, or corneas unsuitable for laser
- **Vision:** improves noticeably the day after surgery
- **Return to daily life and work:** within 3-4 days for most
- **Full recovery:** about 3-4 weeks, varying by patient

## What Are Multifocal and Trifocal Lenses?
Multifocal intraocular lenses include trifocal lenses, which give clear vision at near, intermediate and far distances. People stay active longer, using computers and driving, which raises the need for clear intermediate vision; trifocal lenses meet that need and remove the cosmetic concerns of wearing glasses. Intraocular lenses fall into two groups, monofocal and multifocal; trifocal lenses are a type of multifocal lens.

## Who Are They For?
- Patients over 40 who want to stop wearing glasses: after 40, the lens loses its flexibility and the ability to focus up close (presbyopia).
- Patients with myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism who cannot have laser treatment because their corneal thickness is unsuitable.
- Eyes with both cataract and a refractive error.

## Choosing the Lens
- A detailed eye examination comes first, then a treatment plan and the lens choice.
- The choice considers the eye's structure as well as the patient's lifestyle and needs.
- Choosing the right lens is as important as the surgeon's experience and the hospital's equipment.

## Recovery and Side Effects
- Vision improves noticeably the day after surgery; most return to daily life, including work, within 3-4 days; full recovery takes about 3-4 weeks.
- Intolerance or allergic reaction to the lens is extremely rare.
- Most common side effect: halos and glare around lights, especially at night; in most patients the brain adapts within a few months.
