## Types of Intraocular Lens
Lenses are grouped as toric (for astigmatism) and standard; standard lenses are monofocal, bifocal or trifocal. The surgeon chooses the lens according to the condition and refractive error.
- **Monofocal:** Single focus, the most widely used in cataract treatment; usually set for distance, so glasses may still be needed for near work.
- **Bifocal (multifocal):** Two focal points for distance and near; often chosen in presbyopia.
- **Trifocal (multifocal):** Three focal points: distance, intermediate (computer) and near (reading, phone, knitting) without glasses or with a low prescription.
- **Toric:** For astigmatism; recommended for significant corneal astigmatism (about 1 dioptre or more), may not be needed when it is low. Available in single-focus, bifocal and trifocal versions.
- **EDOF:** Extended range of focus for clear distance and intermediate vision; reading glasses may still be needed for small print. Used in age-related vision problems and cataract.
- **ICL:** For high myopia, astigmatism or hyperopia when laser surgery is not possible because of high prescription or unsuitable corneal thickness.
- **Phakic lenses:** Permanently correct refractive error; made of Collamer (biocompatible, collagen-containing) or acrylic; for astigmatism, hyperopia or myopia when the cornea is not suitable for LASIK.

## Why Are Intraocular Lenses Used?
- Removing vision problems and refractive errors, improving vision quality
- Correcting astigmatism, myopia and other conditions
- Treating cataracts

## Who Are They Suitable For?
- Applied above all to people over forty; not suitable for everyone.
- The eye's structure must be suitable; dry eye or inflammation is treated before surgery.
- The retina and optic nerve must be healthy for a good result; a disturbed visual axis may limit vision quality.
- **ICL:** Ages eighteen to forty-five, with a stable prescription for a year.
- The final decision is taken jointly by the surgeon and the patient.

## The Treatment Journey

### 1. Before Treatment
- Examination and eye tests; existing dry eye or inflammation is treated first.

### 2. During Treatment
- Eyes numbed with drops; the damaged lens is removed and the new lens placed.
- About 15-20 minutes per eye.

### 3. After Treatment
- The eye is bandaged and the patient goes home the same day; the bandage is removed the next morning at the surgeon's check.
- Use the prescribed medication, follow advice and attend follow-ups on time.
