> **Summary:** A toric lens is an intraocular lens implanted surgically in place of the eye's natural lens to correct astigmatism, most often during cataract surgery. It is chosen individually by a specialist, is permanent, and reduces or removes the need for glasses or contact lenses.

## Quick Facts
- **Main use:** Astigmatism correction, mostly in cataract surgery
- **Placement:** Surgically, in place of the natural lens
- **Duration:** Lifelong; not replaced unless there is a problem
- **Also addresses:** Myopia and hyperopia
- **Selection:** Individually designed and chosen by a specialist doctor

## What is a Toric Lens?
A toric lens replaces the eye's natural lens, for example when cataract (protein build-up in the lens) causes blurred vision. It is used in cataract and refractive error treatment and is a frequently used method for astigmatism. Because lens replacement is a very sensitive procedure, an experienced, reliable surgeon is essential.

This article concerns toric intraocular lenses placed during surgery; toric contact lenses for astigmatism also exist.

## How It Is Used
Unlike contact lenses, a toric lens cannot be put in or taken out by the patient. It is implanted surgically; afterwards, the doctor's instructions must be followed and prescribed drops and medications used regularly.

## Toric Lenses vs Other Intraocular Lenses
- **Monofocal lenses:** a single focus, usually chosen to improve distance vision.
- **Trifocal lenses:** for near, intermediate and distance vision.
- **EDOF lenses:** extend the range of focus, improving distance and intermediate vision.
- **Toric lenses:** designed to correct astigmatism.

Contact lenses can be worn by anyone with a suitable eye and removed daily without a doctor's help; intraocular lenses are permanent and only implanted in people who meet certain conditions, particularly after cataract surgery.

## Who is it Suitable for?
- People with blurred distance and near vision or other vision problems due to astigmatism
- Patients who do not want to wear glasses or contact lenses in social and business life
- People with both astigmatism and cataract

## How It Works
The lens is implanted in place of the natural lens. It is made from non-carcinogenic materials suited to the body. It corrects astigmatism as well as hyperopia and myopia, and is especially preferred by older people with astigmatism.

## Advantages
- Lifelong use: no replacement needed at intervals.
- Reduces or eliminates the need for glasses or contact lenses.
- Treats cataract and astigmatism together.
- Provides sharper vision and is among the most permanent treatments.

Suitability should be assessed by an expert ophthalmologist.
