> **Summary:** EDOF (Extended Depth of Focus) intraocular lenses replace the natural lens and extend the range of clear vision from far to intermediate distance instead of fixing it at one point. Used in cataract and presbyopia surgery, they reduce the need for glasses, tend to cause fewer halos than trifocals, and are often considered after previous laser surgery; reading glasses may still be needed for small print.

## Quick Facts
- **Operation duration:** 15-20 minutes per eye
- **Anaesthesia:** topical eye drops
- **Recovery:** back to daily life in a few days, full recovery in 3-4 weeks
- **Price:** EDOF packages from £1,425 per eye

## What It Is
EDOF lenses send a large share of light to distance vision while also supporting intermediate vision, giving uninterrupted vision for driving, television, computer work and outdoor activities. Near focus sits around 40 cm instead of 30 cm for a trifocal (about 10 cm further out), so small print may still need glasses.

## Who It Suits
People who rely mostly on distance and intermediate vision in daily life; some may still need reading glasses from time to time for small print at very close range.

**After previous LASIK, PRK or similar laser:** corneal topography, ocular surface and lens power calculations are examined in detail. EDOF may be recommended for suitable patients who prioritise distance vision quality, but prior laser alone does not make someone suitable.

**Night drivers:** some EDOF designs spread light across fewer focal points than trifocals, which can keep halos and glare lower. No lens removes this risk entirely; night vision also depends on lens design, corneal shape, pupil size, ocular surface health and previous laser surgery.

## Lens Types Compared
- **Monofocal:** one distance, usually far; least night glare, most affordable; reading glasses needed.
- **Monofocal Toric:** also corrects astigmatism; precise positioning needed.
- **Trifocal (Multifocal):** far, intermediate and near; halos at night in the first 6 months.
- **Trifocal (Multifocal) Toric:** plus astigmatism correction at extra charge.
- **EDOF:** very sharp far and intermediate, fewer halos than trifocal, phone and computer without glasses.

## Prices
The price varies with the underlying cause and the operation and is set after examination. All packages include accommodation (4 nights), three meals a day, round-trip airport transfers, doctor examination, all eye tests, lenses and operation, surgery control and payment on site. Package prices do not change with the prescription; for astigmatism a toric lens option is available at a separate price.

## Risks and Possible Side Effects
- **Infection:** very rare; antibiotic drops before and after surgery.
- **Temporary rise in eye pressure:** first few days, controlled with drops.
- **Posterior capsule opacification:** months or years later; cleared with a quick, painless YAG laser treatment lasting 1-2 minutes.
- **Halos and glare at night:** first weeks, usually fade as the brain adapts.
- **Retinal detachment:** very rare; sudden flashes, new floaters or a shadow need immediate contact.

## The Treatment Journey

### Before Treatment
- Detailed examination of general health and eye structure to decide suitability.

### During Treatment
- Anaesthetic eye drops; the EDOF lens replaces the natural lens.

### After Treatment
- Use prescribed medications and drops regularly and attend follow-ups.
- Avoid rubbing the eyes and excessive fatigue.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Q: What vision can I expect with an EDOF lens?**
A: Clear vision at far and intermediate distances, usually without glasses; reading glasses may still be needed for small print.

**Q: When does recovery begin?**
A: Most patients return to daily life within a few days; full recovery takes 3-4 weeks.

**Q: Is EDOF a good choice after laser eye surgery?**
A: It may be recommended after a detailed assessment, but previous laser alone does not make someone suitable.
