## Quick Facts
- **Medical name:** Myokymia
- **Usual course:** Resolves on its own within a few days or weeks; sometimes lasts months
- **Vision:** Not affected unless the spasms are severe and long-lasting

---

## Causes
- **Sleep disturbance:** muscles around the eyes are not rested enough.
- **Stress:** one of the most common causes.
- **Eye fatigue:** long computer or television time, reading in poor light; take a break every 20 minutes at the computer.
- **Caffeine and alcohol.**
- **Vitamin and mineral deficiency:** vitamin B12, vitamin D (needed for calcium absorption and muscle relaxation) and magnesium imbalance.
- **Blepharitis:** eyelid inflammation from blocked oil glands and bacteria.
- **Dry eye:** conjunctival irritation from excessive evaporation or low tear production; caffeine, alcohol, contact lenses and some medications contribute.
- **Eye allergy:** pollen, dust and other antigens; rubbing releases histamine.
- Rarely, nervous system disorders.

## Prevention and Relief
- Get enough quality sleep and reduce stress (relaxation techniques, stress management).
- Cut caffeine and limit screen time.
- Use artificial tears if there is dry eye.
- A balanced diet and supplements if needed.

## When to See a Doctor
- Twitching lasting longer than a few weeks.
- The eyelid closes completely.
- Twitching spreads to other parts of the face.
- Other neurological symptoms (neurological causes are possible).
