> **Summary:** Multifocal lenses are intraocular lenses with rings of different powers for near, intermediate and distance vision, so one implant serves all distances. They replace the natural lens during cataract surgery and are a first choice for people who want to stop wearing glasses or switching between pairs.

## Quick Facts
- **Operation duration:** about 15-20 minutes per eye
- **Anaesthesia:** anaesthetic eye drops, no pain
- **Recovery:** back to daily life in 3-4 days, full recovery in 3-4 weeks
- **Adaptation:** up to 2 weeks (body text); the lens comparison table notes halos at night in the first 6 months
- **Price:** multifocal packages from £1,275 per eye

## What It Is
Standard intraocular lenses are single-focus and give mainly distance vision. Multifocal lenses contain several powers in one lens:
- Sharp vision at near, intermediate and far distances.
- No need for extra glasses.
- Softer transitions between distances.
- Well suited to patients who want to be free of glasses.

## Who It Suits
- People who do not want glasses or contact lenses, including those with myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.
- Not recommended for patients with very sharp expectations; patients with retina or glaucoma problems or problems in the visual centre are offered other solutions.

## Prices
Prices depend on the underlying cause, lens type and operation, set after examination. All packages include accommodation (4 nights), three meals a day, round-trip airport transfers, doctor examination, all eye tests, lenses and operation, surgery control and payment on site. Package prices do not change with the prescription; for astigmatism a toric lens option is available at a separate price.

| Lens | Price (Per Eye) | Method |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Alcon Clareon Monofocal | £850 | Need glasses for reading |
| Alcon Clareon PanOptix Multifocal | £1,275 | Distance & Near & Intermediate |
| Alcon Clareon Vivity | £1,425 | EDOF (extended depth of focus) |
| Johnson & Johnson Odyssey Multifocal (most chosen) | £1,450 | Distance & Near & Intermediate |
| Alcon Clareon PanOptix Pro Multifocal | £1,500 | Distance & Near & Intermediate |
| Johnson & Johnson PureSee (most chosen) | £1,600 | EDOF (extended depth of focus) |
| Johnson & Johnson Odyssey Toric Multifocal | £1,650 | Distance & Near & Intermediate |

## Lens Types Compared
- **Monofocal:** single distance, usually far; reading glasses needed.
- **Monofocal Toric:** adds astigmatism correction.
- **Trifocal (Multifocal):** far, intermediate and near; halos at night in the first 6 months; adaptation needed; suits those who drive little at night.
- **Trifocal (Multifocal) Toric:** adds astigmatism correction at extra charge.
- **EDOF:** far to intermediate; near focus around 40 cm instead of 30 cm; fewer halos.

## Risks and Possible Side Effects
- **Infection:** very rare; antibiotic drops before and after surgery.
- **Temporary rise in eye pressure:** first few days, controlled with drops.
- **Posterior capsule opacification:** months or years later; cleared with a quick, painless YAG laser treatment lasting 1-2 minutes.
- **Halos and glare at night:** first weeks, usually fade as the brain adapts.
- **Retinal detachment:** very rare; sudden flashes, new floaters or a shadow need immediate contact.

## The Treatment Journey

### Before Treatment
- Precise biometry measurements; lens power is calculated before the operation.

### During Treatment
- Sterile operating theatre, operating microscope, microsurgical incisions, anaesthetic drops; the cataract is removed and the lens placed.

### After Treatment
- Getting used to the new vision may take up to 2 weeks; early eye fatigue is normal and disappears with adaptation.
