Dry eye, which is generally thought to be encountered in old age, can actually affect people of all age groups, including children and babies, as digital screens are increasingly entering our lives today. Our tears completely spread to the upper surface of the eye with the opening and closing movement of the eye and keep this part moist and prevent factors such as dust, particles or smoke that may come from outside from irritating the cornea. In some cases, dry eye occurs when tear production decreases or its quality decreases. It may not be easy to recognise the problem of dry eye in children and infants, but if left untreated, it can have negative consequences on the quality and comfort of vision. In this article, you can find detailed information about the symptoms, causes and treatment methods of dry eye in children and infants.
Dry eye problem in children and infants can occur for many different reasons. We can list some of them as follows;
Depending on its degree, dry eye can have serious negative effects on eye health. There are various treatment methods for dry eye problem according to the underlying cause. These methods can be listed as follows;
Blinking drops off markedly while looking at a screen, and the tear film breaks up sooner. In children, long periods of screen time are one of the common reasons behind dryness.
Limiting screen time, taking breaks to look into the distance and keeping the room from getting too dry all reduce the symptoms. Sitting for long periods in front of air conditioning or a radiator also makes dryness worse.
The examination looks at the eye surface and the tear film with a slit lamp, and where needed a dye is instilled to make the irritated areas visible. The lid margins are assessed as well, because inflammation there can accompany dryness.
In children dryness does not always come alone. Allergy, lid inflammation or an uncorrected refractive error can cause similar complaints, so the examination covers those too.
Artificial tear drops ease the symptoms, but which drop to use and how often is decided by your doctor. Preservative-free drops may be preferred when frequent use is needed.
Rubbing the eye increases the irritation, so it matters that the child avoids it. If the symptoms continue despite the drops, or if redness and discomfort in light are added, a further examination is needed.
