Aging is a natural process of life. Although time is intangible, its effects on the human body are visible. Especially our most sensitive organ, our eyes are almost the mirror of time. Op. Dr. Deniz Oygar Baylançiçek, one of the doctors of Kudret Göz Istanbul, underlined that the risk of eye diseases increases with advancing age. She gave information about eye diseases and their treatments, the incidence of which increases with age.

Which diseases threaten our eyes with advancing age?

Op. Dr. Deniz Oygar Baylançiçek: “Our eyes are one of the organs where unwanted traces of time appear. Although under-eye bags, cataracts, eye pressure, yellow spot disease are encountered in different age groups for various reasons, the advancing age increases the incidence of these diseases. In addition, dry eye, presbyopia, that is, difficulty in seeing near, are other age-related diseases.”

A Clear Life is Possible with Smart Lenses!

Kudret Göz Istanbul Ophthalmology Specialist Op. Dr. Deniz Oygar Baylançiçek drew attention to the increase in the incidence of Cataract and Prespiyopia diseases with the effect of advancing age and gave the following information about intraocular lens operations used in the treatment of these two diseases: “Cataract is a disease that interferes with visual clarity as a result of dulling of the natural lens in the eye. Although it can be seen congenitally even in infants, its incidence increases with advancing age. A high rate of 90% of cataract cases occur due to old age over the age of 60. If left untreated, it may progress over time and completely prevent vision. The only treatment method is surgery. With the operation, the natural lens of the eye that has lost its function is replaced with an intraocular lens that is fully compatible with the eye structure and clear vision is provided to the patients. Another disease that we use intraocular lens operations in the treatment is presbyopia. This disease, in which the lens of the eye loses its natural flexibility over time and cannot focus near, begins to be seen over the age of 45. Presbyopia patients need to wear glasses in order to see the near clearly. Today, with smart lenses used in intraocular lens operations, it is possible to see clearly at near, medium and far distances and to say goodbye to reading glasses, one of the symbols of aging.”

Glaucoma can lead to permanent vision loss!

Ophthalmologist Op. Dr. Deniz Oygar Baylançiçek warned about glaucoma and yellow spot diseases: “Glaucoma, also known as eye pressure, is a dangerous disease that can cause permanent vision loss by damaging the optic nerves. Although it is seen in all age groups, everyone over the age of 40 is in the risk group. Since it may progress insidiously without causing any complaints, it may lead to unexpected vision loss. Regular eye examination is important for the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. People over 40 years of age, as well as those with a family history of glaucoma, diabetics, those who have been on cortisone therapy for a long time, those with high eye pressure, high hypermetropia, high myopia and those who have been hit in the eye are also in the risk group. Glaucoma is treated with medication, laser and surgical methods according to its type. Another disease in which age is a risk factor is macular degeneration, commonly known as yellow spot disease. It is most commonly seen over 55 – 60 years of age due to age. Aging, hypertension, genetic factors, smoking, staying under the sun for a long time, high lipid cholesterol, being over the ideal weight can be counted as the causes of yellow spot disease. Like everyone who cares about their health, I recommend that yellow spot patients quit smoking if they smoke, wear sunglasses with UV protection in sunny weather, consume green vegetables and have regular eye examinations. Lutein, vitamins A, C, E and zinc are important in preventive treatment, they can consult their doctors about this issue.”

Menopause Cause Dry Eye!

Kudret Göz Istanbul Ophthalmology Specialist Op. Dr. Deniz Oygar Baylançiçek stated that menopause causes dry eye: “Menopause, which occurs between the ages of 45 – 55 on average, is one of the causes of dry eye in women. Hormonal changes seen with menopause cause decreased tear production and increased tear evaporation in women. In addition, various drugs used in the treatment of complaints that occur during menopause can also cause dry eye. Untreated dry eye can cause permanent eye damage to the cornea. I recommend regular gynaecological examinations, bone measurements and some tests to be performed during menopause, as well as eye examinations.”
