Blurry vision after laser eye surgery is a normal part of how the cornea heals, and how long it lasts depends on the method used. After iLASIK and ReLEx SMILE Pro, most patients see noticeably more clearly the very next day, and vision fully settles within a few weeks. With PRK and No Touch (LASEK), it can take 2-4 weeks for vision to become fully sharp.
Blurriness after laser treatment is a temporary loss of sharpness: the newly reshaped cornea is still healing and does not yet bend light quite evenly. Following your surgeon's instructions helps the recovery go smoothly.
Why Is Vision Blurry After Laser Eye Surgery?
At Kudret Eye İstanbul, the laser methods we offer are iLASIK, ReLEx SMILE Pro and PRK / No Touch (LASEK). The method that is right for you is chosen based on the results of your pre-operative tests.
In iLASIK, the flap is created with a femtosecond laser. During the first 4-6 hours you may feel stinging, watering and burning; these symptoms usually ease considerably after a night's sleep. In ReLEx SMILE Pro, no flap is created; the treatment is carried out through a small 2-4 mm opening in the cornea.
In PRK and No Touch, the thin outer layer of the cornea (the epithelium) is removed and the treatment is applied to the surface of the cornea. Your eye is not patched with these methods; instead, a protective contact lens is worn for a few days. The blurriness you notice until the epithelium grows back is part of this healing.
How Long Does Blurry Vision Last With Each Method?
The duration depends on the method: with iLASIK and ReLEx SMILE Pro, you can return to daily life within 1-2 days, and full clarity comes within a few weeks. With surface treatments such as PRK and No Touch, the return to daily life takes about 1 week, and full clarity 2-4 weeks.
| iLASIK | ReLEx SMILE Pro | PRK / No Touch (LASEK) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it works | Flap created with a femtosecond laser | No flap, 2-4 mm opening | Surface treatment, no flap |
| Early symptoms | Stinging and watering in the first hours | Mild stinging in the first hours | Stinging for 36 hours to 3 days |
| Is the eye patched? | No | No | No, protective lens for a few days |
| Driving the next day | Possible | Possible | With your surgeon's approval, usually after about 1 week |
| Full clarity | A few weeks | A few weeks | 2-4 weeks |
| Pool and sea | After about 20 days | After about 20 days | After about 20 days |
On the first day after surgery, it is normal to experience:
- A gritty or stinging feeling
- Blurry vision
- Watering
- Burning
- Mild pain
- Headache
In the first weeks, you may see halos or glare around lights at night; this usually fades as the eye heals.
What Can Make Blurry Vision Last Longer?
The most common reason blurriness lasts longer after laser treatment is dry eye. If your eyes are dry, your surgeon will recommend artificial tears; skipping them can make the dryness, and the blurriness that comes with it, worse. How long blurriness lasts varies from person to person, but for most patients it improves markedly within days.
Rubbing your eyes, using your drops irregularly and spending time in dusty places can also slow healing.
What Should You Pay Attention to After Laser Eye Surgery?
In the first days, protecting your eyes from water, dust and rubbing, and using your drops regularly, will make healing easier.
Do not drive on the day of surgery. After iLASIK and SMILE Pro you can usually drive the next day; after PRK / No Touch, wait until your vision is clear and your surgeon gives you the go-ahead. On the day of surgery, avoid work and screens and simply rest.
Ask your surgeon which painkiller you can take for a headache. Wearing sunglasses outdoors reduces light sensitivity and helps you feel more comfortable.
Do not scratch or rub your eyes. Avoid strenuous activity such as heavy lifting during the first week. You can go swimming in a pool or the sea after about 20 days.
Stay away from building sites, dirt roads and dusty environments; particles getting into the eye cause irritation and may increase the risk of infection.
Keeping Water Out of Your Eyes
Do not take a bath or shower for the first 24 hours. For the rest of the first week, make sure water, soap and shampoo do not run directly into your eyes when you shower or wash your face.
Wearing Makeup
Do not wear eye makeup for the first week after surgery. Products such as mascara and eyeshadow can get into the eye, and the pressure and rubbing involved in removing makeup can also disturb healing.
After one week you can wear light makeup that is easy to remove. After about 1 month you can return to your usual makeup routine.
Eye Drops
Use the drops your surgeon prescribes exactly as often and for as long as instructed. After surgery you will usually be given antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and lubricating drops; these support healing and reduce the risk of infection.
When Are Follow-Up Checks Done After Laser Eye Surgery?
Follow-up checks make sure your eye is healing as expected and that there are no signs of infection. They are usually scheduled for the day after surgery, one week later and one month later; with PRK and No Touch, there is an additional check a few days after surgery to remove the protective lens. If you are travelling from abroad, plan your stay so that you can attend the early checks, and discuss the later ones with your surgeon.
Recovery varies from person to person. Protecting your eyes and using your drops regularly in the first weeks helps prevent possible problems.
When Should You See a Doctor?
If the blurriness gets worse over the days instead of better, if you have increasing pain, marked redness or discharge, or if your vision suddenly drops, contact your surgeon without waiting for your next scheduled check.
Frequently Asked Questions
- 1
Can blurry vision after laser eye surgery be permanent?
No, in most patients the blurriness clears as the eye heals. If it lasts longer than expected, causes such as dry eye or a remaining prescription are investigated and treated.
- 2
When does vision become clear after PRK and No Touch?
It can take 2-4 weeks for vision to become fully sharp. In the first days, stinging lasts between 36 hours and 3 days, and a protective contact lens is worn during this time.
- 3
When will I see clearly after iLASIK?
In most patients, vision is noticeably clearer the next day and driving is possible. Vision may fluctuate slightly in the first weeks; full clarity settles within a few weeks.
- 4
When can I drive after laser eye surgery?
Do not drive on the day of surgery. After iLASIK and SMILE Pro you can drive the next day; after PRK and No Touch you need to wait until your vision is clear and your surgeon approves.
- 5
When can I swim in the sea or a pool after laser eye surgery?
You can swim in a pool or the sea after about 20 days. This waiting period reduces the risk of eye infection.
- 6
When can I look at screens after laser eye surgery?
From the next day, you can look at screens for short periods. In the first weeks, keeping screen time short, taking frequent breaks and remembering to blink reduces blurriness caused by dryness.
